Noon concert in Alkmaar

My excitement about cathedrals was still fresh when we happened upon this cathedral on our day trip to Aalkmar. I read Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett in preparation for the trip, and the engineering, politics, and vivid characters involved in erecting such a cathedral accompanied my thoughts as I entered.

A touring organist was on hand for a noon concert featuring period pieces written for the two organs in the cathedral! I took enough organ lessons to appreciate the organist's style and the instruments' color. What a treat!

The newer of the two organs in the building had a beautiful wooden cover, featuring gorgeous paintings. I loved the Bach theme and variations the organist played on this instrument - fun to hear the different stops used.
